Bellefeuille Bags Budweiser Pole Dash; Earns Pole for Great Lakes Border Battle

SUPERIOR, Wisc. (07/1/2017) - The 2nd running of the Great Lakes Border Battle at the AMSOIL Speedway in Superior, WI took place over the 4th of July holiday weekend for the second season in a row in front of huge crowds and an overflowing pit area filled with WISSOTA Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks and for the first time ever, the WISSOTA Late Models were a part of the Border Battle as well.

45 Midwest Modifieds, 43 Modifieds, 21 Late Models and 16 Pure Stocks were in attendance on the opening night, which featured a full program of Late Models, Midwest Modifieds and Pure Stocks, along with two rounds of heat races and a pole dash for the Modifieds.

Modified heat race action saw Jeff Spacek, Darrell Nelson, Deven VanHouse, Al Uotinen, Jody Bellefeuille, Neil Balduc, Matt Leer, Scott Greer, Steve Stuart and Ashley Anderson race to checkered flags in some very highly contested heat races and then saw Bellefeullie lead all 12 laps in the nightcap Budweiser Pole Dash to put his #11 car on the pole for Sunday night’s 60-lap, $10,500 to win main event. Shane Sabraski would charge from his fifth starting spot to put his #7a on the outside of row one along with Bellefeuille for one of the richest races of the season.

In the night’s Pure Stock feature, Ryan Savoy took command at the drop of the green from the outside of the front row and paced the field for much of the 15-lap event with defending National Champion Michael Blevins in hot pursuit. Blevins dogged Savoy for much of the event, putting heavy pressure on Savoy’s #16 car until Michael was able to complete the winning pass with just two laps remaining and then rode off to the $250 victory. Savoy raced across the line in second with Kyle Copp third, Dean Pronschinske third from his 11th starting spot and 10th starting Al Rapp rounding out the top five.

After 5 heat races and a pair of b-mains set the 24 car starting field, Michael Truscott was highest in passing points and lead the Midwest Modified field to the green in their $1,500 to win, 25-lap event, but 3rd starting Skeeter Estey quickly took the top spot and tried to run off from his competitors throughout the early stages of the main event. Estey paced the field around the high line of the speedway, while David Simpson, Jake Smith and 19th starting Justin Froemming were making their way toward the front picking off cars left and right. After the lone caution of the night bunched the field up mid-race, Simpson appeared in the top five on the restart and began to pressure the front runners, while Estey continued his advantage out front. Simpson slid his way into second and tried to run down Estey out front, while Smith, Froemming, Truscott, 18th starting Kevin Eder and Grant Southworth were locked in a very intense battle just behind the leaders. Estey went on to claim the win for the second year in a row on the opening night of the Great Lakes Border Battle with Simpson racing to a career best finish in second. Smith came home a solid third while Froemming raced from 19th to 4th to earn hard charger honors and Southworth rounded out the top five finishers.

Travis Budisalovich and Jesse Glenz sat on the front row for the 30-lap, $2,500 to win Late Model main event. Budisalovich took command at the start and ran out front during the first few circuits while the rest of the field tried to sort themselves out. Glenz, 3rd starting Darrell Nelson and 4th starting Rick Hanestad began a great battle up front, all trying to chase down Budisalovich for the lead. Travis continued to pace the field for the first half of the event with Nelson searching and searching lap after lap for the fastest way to get along side of the #31 for the lead. Budisalovich continued to hold off Nelson out front, while Jake Redetzke put his name in the mix as well, moving in to challenge Glenz for fourth, while Hanestad continued his pursuit of the front runners.

Nelson was finally able to sweep by Budisalovich for the lead and then took off, while Hanestad was also able to get by Travis into second and began his assault on Nelson out front. The field began to work through lapped traffic and Hanestad was able to cut into Nelson’s advantage dramatically, pulling up to Darrell’s rear bumper with a handful of circuits remaining. Nelson would be able to hold off Hanestad for the win in the non-stop event, with Glenz holding off Redetzke for third and Budisalovich rounding out the top five. Harry Hanson earned hard charger honors with his 17th to 9th run.

Championship night of the 2nd annual Great Lakes Border Battle will kick off on Sunday, July 2nd at 6pm with another full program of WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and Pure Stocks along with b-mains, a last chance race and the 60-lap, $10,500 to win main event for the WISSOTA Modifieds.
