Redetzke Wins Prelude to the Johnny, Seng Claims Fourth NLRA Title

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (September 5, 2019) – The 22nd NLRA Late Model season came to a close as the 13th annual John Seitz Memorial kicked off on Thursday night at River Cities Speedway. The WISSOTA Dirt Track Racing Series brought in 38 Late Models, 47 Midwest Modifieds and 28 Street Stocks for the Prelude to the Johnny.

Mike Balcaen and NLRA championship contender, Shane Edginton, led the field of 26 to the green flag for the 25-lap main event. Edginton grabbed the early lead, but Balcaen shot by on lap three. Meanwhile, Brad Seng, who entered the night with a 30 point lead atop the NLRA standings, was mired back in the 15th position.

Balcaen ran a torrid pace through the first half of the race, but lapped traffic held up the newly crowned WISSOTA Canada State points champion. That allowed Redetzke to take the point with eight laps to go. Once out front, Redetzke drove away with the win as Pat Doar slid by Balcaen with two to go to claim the runner-up spot. Edginton and Strand rounded out the top five.

“The biggest thing was getting put to fourth on the final restart and getting me on the bottom,” said Redetzke after the race. “If I would have been in third and had to restart on the top I don’t think we would have gotten this thing done. I just stayed on the bottom and tried to find the smoothest lane around. Getting a win tonight definitely gives you some confidence going into the rest of the weekend.”

Seng battled his way up to finish in the eighth position, which gave him his fourth NLRA series championship by a mere eight points over Edginton.

“I’ve been doing this a long time and we’ve got some really good, young talent coming up right now. Shane Edginton has really been working hard and it’s paying off. Dustin Strand, you can’t say enough about him. They really make you stay on top of your game,” said Seng. “With Shane starting up front in the feature and myself starting 15th, I had to get a little youth out of me tonight and get up on the wheel.”

Austin Hunter cruised to the Happy Harry’s WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature win. The Winnipeg driver led all 20 trips around the high-banked three-tenths mile oval en route to the win. Hunter Hougard, Nate Reynolds, Jason Halverson and Jamie Dietlzer rounded out the top five.

Parker Anderson made the trip to Grand Forks from Phillips, Wisconsin and picked up the feature win. Doug VanMill led the opening circuits until Rory Opp took the point on lap four. In a caution-plagued feature, Opp was strong on nearly each and every restart, but Anderson found a way by the veteran with three laps to go and took the win.
