Turnbull Dominates 13th Annual John Seitz Memorial at River Cities Speedway

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (September 7, 2019) – Aaron Turnbull became the 11th different winner of the John Seitz Memorial on Saturday night at River Cities Speedway after a dominating performance in the 92-lap main event.

The Estevan, Saskatchewan driver started fifth on the grid and led the final 43 laps en route to the win.

“I would have never thought in a million years. There are so many good cars here. I can’t believe it,” said an elated Turnbull in victory lane.

River Cities Speedway regulars Brad Seng and Dustin Strand led the field to the green for the $9,200-to-win main event with Strand taking the early lead. Strand led the first 14 circuits until he was forced into the infield when he lost the brakes on his machine.

Turnbull inherited the lead but had his hands full with fellow Canadian, Shane Edginton. The two raced hard for the lead amid lapped traffic until Edginton took the point on lap 27. Edginton led up to and after the scheduled fuel stop on lap 42.

A battle for the lead ensued again as Turnbull found another gear in his Millar powered MB Customs No. 21. Turnbull took the lead once again on lap 49 and quickly checked out from the rest of the field.

Turnbull had the race in hand until a late-race caution put A.J. Diemel, a two-time Seitz Memorial champion, right behind him for the restart.

“I thought I was done for with those cautions at the end. I looked up at the board and saw the 58 [Diemel] and the 27 [Jake Redetzke] behind me,” said Turnbull. “I had been running the bottom the whole race and I didn’t know where to go for the restarts. I was waiting for the 58 to pull up alongside of me. I saw somebody’s nose at one point. I don’t know if it was Diemel or a lapped car, but once I saw that I stepped it up another 10 percent.”

The final restart came with three laps to go. Turnbull held off Diemel with relative ease to pick up the win by just over a second at the checkers.

Diemel finished second, followed by 19th-place starter Don Shaw. Shaw started the night by wheeling his way from 13th to second in B-main number two to transfer into the main event.

Saturday was only Turnbull’s 10th Late Model start of the year, one of which included a top 10 with the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Models at River Cities in July.

Tyler Peterson is no stranger to RydellCars.com Victory Lane at the Bullring. The Hickson, N.D. driver returned to victory lane in his WISSOTA Modified as he swept the weekend in convincing fashion. Peterson took the lead from Clayton Wagamon on lap seven. With Ward Imrie in tow, the top two drivers distanced themselves from the rest of the field.

While Peterson led the final 18 laps, Imrie was hot on his heels for the majority of the race. Imrie attempted a slide job on a pair of late-race restart, but Peterson was able to hold him off and race to the win.

Nate Reynolds held off Lance Schill to pick up the Happy Harry’s WISSOTA Midwest Modified win. With two laps to go, a huge pile up on the front straightaway occurred after the third and fourth place runners got together. No less than 13 were involved, many of which were heavily damaged, including Reise Stenberg who got upside down as a result of contact.

When the race resumed, only seven of the original 25 starters took the green flag. Reynolds ran a perfect pair of laps around the three-tenths mile oval to edge out Schill for the win.

The Wells Concrete WISSOTA Street Stock feature looked to be a two-horse race early on. Daniel Aberle and Doug VanMill broke away from the pack as they put on a great battle for the lead.

A restart with six to go brought new life to third-place runner, Bob Banish Jr. Banish went to the top side of the speedway to move past VanMill for second. From there, he set his sights on Aberle. Banish and Aberle raced side by side all the way to the checkers as Banish picked up the win by a half car length at the North Dakota Eye Clinic Finish Line.
