Ebert Earns Biggest Career Payday At Border Battle

SUPERIOR, Wisc. (06/29/19) - The 3rd running of the Great Lakes Border Battle driven by G-Style Transport weekend opened up on Saturday, June 29th with an event record car count and jammed crowd, who collectively witnessed a thrilling five division program, which saw Dan Ebert race to his biggest career payday in the Modified division; Darrell Nelson and Skeeter Estey pick up their second straight Border Battle titles in the Late Models and Midwest Modifieds respectively; Jake Smith win the Hornet main event and Jared Akervik race to his first ever feature win in the Pure Stocks.

After preliminary action was in the books, the Pure Stock main was up first and Trevor Treviranus took the lead early from the second row and lead much of the event with Jared Akervik and Cory Jorgensen giving chase. Akervik was able to sneak by into the top spot with just a few circuits remaining and was able to hold on to the top spot, racing to his first career feature win in the process with Treviranus, Jorgensen, Dylan Shelton and James Vendela rounding out the top five.

The Midwest Modifieds were up next with Brandon Copp and Skeeter Estey pacing the field to the green. Estey got out front early and lead every lap of the main, but not without pressure from Copp and Justin Froemming, who were in a very spirited battle for the runner up spot. Estey continued to lead with Copp, Froemming and Dalbeck swapping the second spot over and over until the final lap, when Froemming spun as the field entered turn one, collecting Dalbeck and necessitating a 1 lap shootout for the $1,500 payday. Estey went on to get the victory, with 17th starting Jason VandeKamp rallying for an impressive second place finish over Copp, Dalbeck and 19th starting Tommy Richards.

The Late Model main event saw Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Jimmy Mars take the lead on the opening lap from the third starting position and drive away from a brewing battle for second between Pat Doar, John Kaanta, Jake Redetzke, Deven VanHouse and Darrell Nelson. The race ran non stop with Mars setting the pace, while VanHouse and Doar raced side by side for second with Nelson coming from the fourth row to join the battle. Darrell was able to get by both Doar and VanHouse into the runner up spot and then began to track down Mars in lapped traffic. Nelson closed the gap and began to pressure Mars for the lead before he was able to race by into the lead and stretch his advantage for the $2,000 payday. Mars held strong for second with VanHouse edging Doar for third. 13th starting Rick Hanestad rounded out the top five.

The $3,000 to win Modified main event was up next with Dan Ebert and Danny Vang sharing the front row of the 27-car starting field. Ebert took the lead from the start and never looked back en route to the biggest payday of his successful career. Mike Anderson and Vang staged a good battle for the runner up spot for several laps with Don Eischens in tow. 15th staring Johnny Broking and 16th starting Shane Sabraski were moving through traffic and were in a battle with Dave Cain for a top five spot as the laps wound down. Ebert went on to win by 1.5 seconds over Anderson, who held off hard charging Broking and Sabraski for third. Cain rounded out the top five.

The Hornet feature wrapped up the opening night of the Great Lakes Border Battle and national point leader Jake Smith, who earned the most passing points in heat race action, started on the pole and lead wire to wire for his 14th feature win of the 2019 season. Nate Servaty and Grayson Pratt raced side by side for the runner up spot throughout the entire 15 lap race with Servaty coming home with a runner up finish and Pratt rounding out the podium in third. Paul Ripley and Tyler Schramm were the rest of the top five.
