Mike Anderson Storms From 14th To Win Mod Nationals By 0.014sec In Epic Photo Finish

Ogilvie, MN (May 28, 2017) – Mother Nature put the drivers and fans at Ogilvie Raceway through the ringer Sunday night with on and off rain showers, but after a delayed start to the program, the 12th Annual Wehrs Machine Minnesota Modified Nationals kicked off.

The night of WISSOTA PolyDome Dirt Track Race Series action began with heats for the support classes followed by B Features for the Modifieds as well as a Last Chance race to get drivers qualified for the 50 lap main event. 26 Modifieds made the cut for the big dance, and put on a great race with a phenomenal finish.

After a slight change in the line-up, the WISSOTA Mod Fours were up first for the night. Mitch Hribar and Robert Holtquist led the drivers to green and Hribar sped away with the point. Holtquist held second and Dean Larson took third, but soon Holtquist slid into the infield. A couple other cars made contact in turn one which brought out a caution. Hribar was alone on the restart with Larson and Trever Roediger to his rear. Hribar drove away when the green dropped and Larson retook second. Justin Pogones moved to Roediger’s side and they battled for third. Pogones nosed ahead but Roeidger kept close and retook his side. Hribar and Larson moved past slower cars and soon Pogones and Roediger were there too. Pogones made the pass first and broke free of Roediger, however the yellow waved. Hribar remained in command on the restart while Larson retained second. They pulled away from the field while Pogones and Roediger resumed the battle for third. Roediger worked Pogones, moved low on the track and made the pass. Hribar led the remaining laps and took the win and swept the Mod Four features of the weekend.

Jay Kesan and Jimmy Gullikson brought the WISSOTA Street Stocks to the line for their feature. The green dropped and Gullikson sped off with the lead. Kesan claimed second and Sam Fankhauser snagged third. The laps went by with drivers in that order and Gullikson extended his lead by a straight away. Just then Travis Loew suffered a mechanical problem and the yellow waved. Gullikson was in command on the restart with Kesan and Fankhauser in tow. They took the green and were nearly three wide in the turn, but Gullikson sped off. Kesan and Fankhauser fought for second and Fankhauser zipped by on the low side. Fankhauser closed the gap with Gullikson and worked the #21 for the lead. Gullikson however held him back and took the win.

29 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were scheduled to start the feature event, and 28 made the call. Grady Shearer and Jeffrey Lien, Jr. brought the drivers to green and battled door to door for the lead. Jeremy Nelson took third while Lien, Jr. slid in front of Shearer. Lien, Jr. drifted high in the turn and Shearer flew by. The yellow then appeared and drivers were sorted. Shearer was alone on the restart with Lien, Jr. And Nelson in tow. Nelson grabbed second and Shane Howell took third this round. Nelson closed in on Shearer, but Shearer pulled away. Nelson kept close to Shearer’s #97 while Kyle Matuska passed Howell for third. Matuska closed in on the top two drivers as they separated from the pack. Travis Schulte and Howell began a battle for fourth but Jason VandeKamp snuck by on the low side and took the point. VandeKamp caught Matuksa for third but Matuska took off. Howell came back to VandeKamp’s door and they ran nose to nose. They went through turns three and four and rubbed a bit, but both kept going. VandeKamp and Howell remained side by side for laps until the white waved and VandeKamp pulled away. Shearer led the entire race and grabbed the feature win.

It was now time for the Big Event, The Big Dance, the much anticipated WISSOTA Modified Nationals 50 lap feature race. After a four wide salute, the drivers got in order with Jody Bellefeuille and Dave Cain on the first row. As the green flew, Bellefeuille claimed the lead with Cain and Shane Sabraski as the top three. Jeremy Nelson (4) and Kelly Estey battled for fourth and Estey took the point. Sabraski raced low on the track surface and passed Cain for second. Sabraski then caught Bellefeuille and slid by for the lead. It didn't take Sabraski long to catch slower cars with 10 laps complete of 50. Just then, Jeffrey Lien, Jr.’s car began to smoke and the yellow flag dropped. Sabraski was first on the restart but Estey and Bellefeuille took his side and they were three wide in turns one and two. Bellefeuille pulled out of the turn first and took the lead but the yellow appeared again. Bellefeuille brought the drivers back to green, but suffered a mechanical break and the yellow returned. Sabraski was again in the lead as the race resumed and Darrell Nelson took second. D. Nelson went high in the turn and Mike Anderson snuck by for the point. The race was half over and a fuel break was given to the drivers so the yellow waved. After the short break, Sabraski retook the lead with Anderson and D. Nelson in tow. D. Nelson and Anderson fought for second while Dan Ebert and Matt Gilbertson raced door to door for fifth. They swapped back and forth, but Ebert nosed ahead for the spot. The top four were in solid positions but Anderson closed the gap with Sabraski as the laps passed. Sabraski caught slower cars which gave Anderson the chance to catch the #7a. Sabraski weaved through the traffic and stretched his lead with few laps to go. Anderson kept after Sabraski but when the white flag waved, Sabraski seemed to have the win secured. As they came to the final turns, Sabraski bobbled in turn three and Anderson raced to his door. They exited turn four towards the checkers and drag raced down the front chute. The flags were dropped and the two drivers crossed the line with a margin of .014 seconds. Anderson made it to the feature through a B Feature, started 14th in the main event, and took the win in the 12th Annual Minnesota Modified Nationals. Sabraski settled for second with Darrell Nelson, Jeremy Nelson (4) and Dan Ebert as the top five.

With the final checkers being waved, the Wehrs Machine Modified Nationals were recorded in the history books. Never in the 11 years of Mod Nationals presented by FYE Motorsports has there been a repeat winner, and year 12 followed that same tradition with another new champion. Thank you to all the drivers and fans that toughed out the rain during the afternoon and evening, racing will resume next Saturday at the Big O with the Advantage RV Modified tour joining the night.

Bellefeuille and Cain Earn Mod Nationals Main Event Front Row

Ogilvie, MN (May 27) – Saturday night was the first night of WISSOTA PloyDome Dirt Track Race Series action featuring the 12th Annual Wehrs Machine & Racing Products Minnesota Modified Nationals. This is the first year FYE Motorsports held the event at the Ogilvie Raceway, and it featured a new exciting format.

The first night gave Modified drivers the optimal chance to earn passing points by running three heats with a rotating line up. The top drivers in points would secure their spot in the main event, and the others would race the B Features and Last Chance races on Sunday. Even though WISSOTA Modifieds races only heats, WISSOTA Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Mod Fours ran complete shows.

Round one of the WISSOTA Modified heats began with Neil Balduc and Landon Atkinson on the front row. Atkinson claimed the early lead while Balduc and Darrell Nelson fought for second. Atkinson had a comfortable lead, but Nelson closed the gap as laps passed. Atkinson however held his line and took the win with Nelson and Jeremy Nelson (4) as top drivers.

Michael Truscott jumped in a Modified for the night and started aside Clayton Wagamon in the second head. Wagamon took the lead as the green waved, Scott Greer grabbed second while Dan Ebert and Truscott battled for third. Wagamon continued to lead with Greer to his rear when Wagamon went high in the turn. Greer flew by on the low groove and snagged the lead. The top drivers spaced out and took the checkers with Greer, Wagamon and Ebert as the top three.

Ricky Thorton, Jr. and Jason Gross took first and second when the next heat began, but Johnny Scott moved from sixth to third before the second lap was complete. Dave Cain and Matt Leer were all over Scott’s #1st but Scott held them back. Just then Gross suffered a mechanical problem and coasted to a stop triggering a caution. Thorton, Jr. led through the restarts but Cain slid by Scott and into second. Cain chased after Thorton, Jr., but settled for second while Thorton, Jr. took the checkers.

Adam Ayotte and Cory Bruggeman brought the final heat of round one of Modifieds on the track. When the green flag dropped drivers battled for top points, but Bruggeman was first at the end of lap one. Jody Bellefeuille moved into second and Denis Czech ran third. They kept in those points, but as the laps passed, Bellefeuille inched closer to Bruggeman. With the white flag in the air, the drivers were door to door, but Bellefeuille didn’t’ have enough steam and Bruggeman grabbed the win.

Round two of WISSOTA Modifieds kicked off with Kevin Eder in the lead and Denis Czech took second. Jody Bellefeuille took third and moved to Czech’s side. Czech and Bellefeuille rode Eder’s #22e but Eder held them back. Bellefeuille moved into second just as the yellow flew. Eder was in command on the restart but Bellefeuille slid by him for the lead. Eder kept after Bellefeuille but Bellefeuille grabbed the win.

Shane Sabraski took the immediate lead as the next heat started while Jeffrey Lien, Jr. And Darrell Nelson took second and third. The drivers ran that order the remainder of the race and Sabraski took the win with a significant lead.

Rick Niemi claimed the lead while Jeremy Nelson (4) and Brent Dutenhoffer fought for second in the next Modified heat. Nelson took the point and began to work Niemi for the lead. Nelson dove low then slid up the track to get Niemi, but couldn't make his car stick. Nelson kept at Niemi’s side and they battled the final lap. The checkers were raised and as they came down the front chute, Niemi nosed out the win. Nelson settled in second and Dutenhoffer took third.

The final heat of round two was another exciting race with Kelly Estey and Justin Oestreich on the front row. Oestreich took the lead at the end of lap one while Dan Ebert pulled a slide job on Estey. Estey however pulled out of the curve and retained the runner up point. Ebert and Dave Cain rode Estey’s bumper but Ebert kissed the wall. The yellow waved, and when the race resumed, Estey rode the wall and snuck by Oestreich. Cain moved to Oestreich’s door and soon moved into second. Cain dove low on the track, Estey continued to race the high line and they were panel to panel. Estey pulled out of the turn first, but Cain kept after him until the checkers flew. Estey crossed the line and took the win with Cain and Oestreich in tow.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were up for the first feature event and Jay Kesan and Jimmy Gullikson brought the drivers to green. Gullikson claimed the lead and Kesan held second but Tyler Speltz hit the front wall and the yellow waved. Gullikson was alone on the restart but as the race got underway, the yellow reappeared. Once again the drivers were aligned with Gullikson in command and Kesan and Davey Kruchten battled side by side for second. Behind the second place battle was Kolby Kiehl, Kevin Schmidt and Kyle Howland in a three wide fight for fourth. Howland then looped his car in the turn and the drivers were slowed. Gullikson brought the drivers back to speed while Charlie Shiek worked his way though the pack. Shiek moved to Kruchten’s side, and then to Kesan’s side. Kesan held Shiek’s car back and Kruchten moved into battle. Sam Fankhauser closed in and he, Kruchten and Shiek raced closed for points three through fifth. While they fought, Kesan reeled in Gullikson’s car and began to work the #21g. Kesan nosed under Gullikson and they were bumper to bumper with one lap to go. They entered the turn and Kesan snuck by on the low groove and took the lead. Gullikson tried to reclaim the point, but Kesan took the checkers. Gullikson settled in second with Kruchten, Shiek and Fankhauser as the top finishers.

Tyler Larson and Matt Halls led the WISSOTA Mod Fours to the green for the next feature race and Larson claimed the lead. Halls grabbed second and Dean Larson snagged third, but Mitch Hribar moved to D. Larson’s door. They rode Halls’ rear and went to make a move for the second point as the yellow waved. A series of cautions kept the Mod Fours at a stop and go pace, but Tyler Larson continued to hold the lead. Hribar rode the high line and after a restart for debris, Hribar moved into the lead point. One final restart slowed the drivers but as they restarted Hribar, Dustin Holtquist and T. Larson were three wide for the lead. Hribar nosed ahead with the lead but Holtquist kept with him. Holtquist and Hribar split up for a slower car, but regrouped with one lap to go. Holtquist and Hribar were door to door out of the final turn, and when they crossed the line, Hribar’s #M16 took the win. Holtquist, D. Larson, T. Larson and
Trever Roediger were the top drivers.

The third and final round of WISSOTA Modified heats began with Johnny Scott and Denis Czech on the front row. Scott shot into the lead with #1st while Czech took second with #2. Czech and Scott had a good lead when Czech charged to Scott’s door. As the battle for first heated up, the yellow slowed the drivers down. Scott was alone on the restart with Czech and Atkinson in tow. Atkinson, Czech and Jeremy Nelson (4) went three wide in the turn for second and Czech held the point. Scott separated himself from the pack while others battled for points. Scott took the checkers while Czech and Atkinson took other top points.

J.T. Johnson and Jason Grimes brought the next heat to green and Johnson sped away. Grimes took second, Kelly Estey claimed third and they ran that order the race entirety. Johnson built up a good lead as the laps went by and took the checkers in his #89jr.

As the third heat began, Ricky Thorton Jr., Shane Sabraski and Jeffrey Lien, Jr. raced three wide for the lead. Sabraski squeezed out the point and drove away from the field. Lien, Jr. took second and Jeremy Nelson (06) grabbed third with Dave Cain to his rear. Cain and Nelson passed Lien, Jr. on the low groove, Cain then moved to Nelson’s side to fight for second. Nelson pulled away however and held onto the point with a couple laps to go. Sabraski took the win over a straight away ahead of the competition with Nelson and Cain as top drivers.

The final Modified heat of the night was a doozie with a few cautions, but some great side by side and four wide action. Matt Leer and Kyle Thell led the drivers to green and through a few restarts but Thell and Leer raced door to door when the cautions subsided. Thell nosed ahead after a lap for the lead with Leer in second. Bellefeuille, who restarted last, moved into the third point with Kevin Eder on his bumper. Eder’s bumper then made contact in the turn and Bellefeuille spun. Thell was in charge on the restart, Bellefeuille took second and then passed Thell for the lead. He led the final laps and took the win.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds completed the night of race action with a caution free feature race. Jason VandeKamp grabbed first when the race began and Grady Shearer battled with Michael Truscott for second. As the laps went by, many drivers were door to door, side by side battling for race points through the field. VandeKamp established a large lead when the racing intensified. Zach Benson took second while Andy Miskowic, Jeremy Nelson and Truscott went three wide for third. Truscott and Nelson moved to Benson’s sides and they raced three wide. Truscott took the point and left Benson and Nelson in a fight for third. VandeKamp caught slower drivers and soon the top drivers were in traffic. Truscott closed the gap VandeKamp had established and was within a car length with two laps to go. VandeKamp however held his line and took the win in his FYE Motorsports #16. Truscott got a close second with Benson, Nelson and Dan Wheeler in top points.
