Bellefeuille Blasts To Great Lakes Border Battle Victory Lane

SUPERIOR, Wisc. (07/2/17) - Night 2 of the 2nd running of the Great Lakes Border Battle at the AMSOIL Speedway in Superior, WI was held on Sunday, July 2nd with sunny skies and another great crowd in attendance to witness the crowning of the Border Battle champion for the second season in a row.

51 Midwest Modifieds, 43 Modifieds and 14 Pure Stocks were in attendance on night two, which featured a full program of Midwest Modifieds and Pure Stocks, along with a pair of b-mains, a last chance race and the 60-lap, $10,500 to win Modified main event.

Modified b-main action saw the top 6 finishers transfer into the big show, with Kelly Estey and Al Uotinen winning their respective b-mains and earning seventh row starting spots for the 60-lapper. Drivers finishing 7th on back in the b-mains were given one last chance to get into the program with a last chance race, with only the winner transferring and Jeff Spacek nipped Pat Cook in a photo finish to steal the final transfer spot in a thriller. Cook and Steve Lavasseur were drawn as the two provisional starters, earning starting spots 26 and 27 in the main event.

In the night’s Pure Stock feature, Ryan Savoy took command at the drop of the green just as he did the night before, but tonight he was not going to settle for second and paced the field for the entire 15-lap distance to claim his first career Great Lakes Border Battle title and the $250 paycheck that went along with it. Andrew Hanson chased Savoy to the checkered with 8th starting Kyle Copp third at the finish and Dylan Shelton and Al Rapp rounding out the top five.

In the same format as the previous night, after 5 heat races and a pair of b-mains set the 26 car starting field, Jason VandeKamp sat on the pole after being the highest in passing points after heat race action and jumped out to the early lead over opening night winner Skeeter Estey, who started on the outside of row 1. VandeKamp paced the field early with 4th starting David Simpson quickly moving into second. Kevin Eder, Deven VanHouse and Dan Kingsley moved into a great four car battle for third with Estey as Simpson tried to run down VandeKamp out front. VandeKamp, who had never won at the Superior, WI oval until the previous Friday night was lights out driving away from the field, but Simpson, who raced to a career best second place finish the night before, was trying to stay with him up front. A pair of mid-race cautions kept the field bunched up, but VandeKamp was up to the challenge on each restart and drove away for the victory and his first Great Lakes Border Battle title, Simpson capped off a great weekend with his second straight runner up finish, while Eder crossed the line third with VanHouse and Kingsley rounding out the top five. Corey Jones earned hard charger honors with his 22nd to 15th run.

The nightcap featured the 27-car, 60-lap, $10,500 to win Modified main event with Jody Bellefeuille and Shane Sabraski sharing the front row and pacing the field to the green. After driver introductions, a 4-wide salute to fans and fireworks show was completed, Bellefeuille blasted from the pole to the lead and set the pace, but a lap 2 caution for Cory Bruggeman bunched the field back up quickly. On the restart, again Bellefeuille took the point, but Dave Cain dove under him and took a peek for the lead in turn three, however Bellefeuille was up to the challenge and took the top spot back and tried to stretch his lead lap after lap until the second caution of the event flew for Tony Schill on lap 15, just as the leaders were about to encounter lapped traffic. On the restart, Bellefeuille again took off with Cain and Sabraski engaged in a side by side battle for second for the next eight laps until 8th running Jake Hartung turned his #05 car around in turn two, bringing out the third and final caution before the fuel stop. Again, Bellefeuille took off out front with Sabraski and Cain again locked in battle for second with Darrell Nelson fourth and a thrilling battle for fifth between Mike Anderson, Ashley Anderson, Steve Stuart and Kevin Eder happening just behind the leaders. Another great battle for 9th was ensuring between Jason Miller, Scott Greer, Kelly Estey, Jeffrey Lien Jr., Matt Leer and Al Uotinen as well. The field ran caution free until the lap 30 fuel stop, at which time Bellefeuille had built up a 3.874 second advantage. The field came to a stop on the front stretch and the crews completed their work during the 8 minute stop before the field fired back up and re-assumed their double file restart formation. On the restart it was much of the same with Bellefeuille taking off to the lead he had enjoyed all night to that point and Cain and Sabraski again picking up their door to door battle for second. The final caution of the event flew on lap 34 for a Pat Cook spin in turn four, and then the final 26 laps were run caution free with Bellefeuille alone out front. Mike Anderson began to stretch his legs a bit in the late going as he snuck by Ashly Anderson and Sabraski into third with under 10 laps to go, trying to win his second crown jewel of the season after his thrilling Minnesota Modified Nationals victory at the Ogilvie Raceway in Ogilvie, MN on Memorial Day weekend. Bellefeuille had other ideas however, and continued to keep everyone at bay, running alone out front with lapped traffic not seeming to affect the driver of the #11 as he worked his way around the slower cars with ease. Cain, who was solidly in second, was working through the same lapped traffic, but not quite as easily was trying to keep Bellefeuille in his sights, but Jody was just too strong and lead all 60 laps for the richest payday of his career. Cain came home a solid second with Anderson finishing on the podium for the second year in a row with a third place run. Ashley Anderson took fourth from Darrell Nelson and held it to the finish with Sabraski 6th, Eder 7th, Uotinen 8th, Greer 9th and Miller rounding out the top ten.
