Badger State Nationals Cancelled
The 3rd annual Badger State Nationals,
scheduled to be held at the Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond,
Wisconsin on October 1st and 2nd 2010 has been
cancelled and removed from the schedule event organizers announced on
Wednesday. Regrettably, event promoter Chris Stepan said ‘I have
encountered a non-avoidable scheduling conflict with the first weekend
in October that I cannot get out of or reschedule, so the only option
was to remove the Badger from the schedule for this fall. With it being
mid-July already and with so many area tracks running specials in the
area in late September and early October, it was not really feasible to
reschedule the event for another weekend, but instead myself and CLS
decided to pull it from the schedule and hopefully get it back going in
full stride in 2011.’ Stepan also said ‘I knew about the potential
conflict a few months ago, but was working as hard as possible to get
out of being conflicted, but just this week was informed that there is
no way out of it, so I have no choice but to cancel the Badger for this
year.’
We apologize to those who planned on coming to the
Badger, but there are many other area specials that weekend that folks
can attend, so hopefully all racers and fans can find somewhere else to
spend the first weekend of October. For more information regarding the

2nd Annual
Badger
State
Nationals Sees Exciting New Format!
Topless Late Models, IMCA Modifieds & Much, Much More……
August 3rd 2009 – St.
Cloud,
Minnesota (Prepared by FYE
Motorsports Promotions)
The dates for the 2nd Annual FYE Motorsports
promoted Badger State Nationals are rapidly approaching and set to take
place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 1st, 2nd and 3rd 2009
with an inclement weather date of Sunday, October 4th if necessary at
the 3/8 mile high banked Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI.
St. Cloud, Minnesota based FYE Motorsports
Promotions has leased the Cedar Lake Speedway for the second year in a
row and will present the 2nd annual Badger State Nationals which will
wrap up the 2009 racing season at Cedar Lake in a grand fashion and will
feature NASCAR Late Models racing for a purse of $4,000 to win; IMCA
Modifieds running for $1,500 to win; NASCAR Super Stocks racing for
$1,200 to win; NASCAR Midwest Modifieds and NASCAR Street Stocks, who
will each be gunning for a whopping $1,000 to win each, Pure Stocks, who
will run for a $500 paycheck and Hornets, racing for $300 to win
throughout the weekend. The winner of the IMCA Modified event will be
added to the ballot for the 2010 Fastshafts All Star Race at the Super
Nationals in Boone, IA as
well.
The Late Model portion of the program will
feature the only TOPLESS Late Model event anywhere in the Midwest as the ground pounding NASCAR Late Models will run
without roofs for the 2nd annual Badger State Nationals. The Modified
portion of the show will feature the first ever IMCA-sanctioned Modified
event held at Cedar Lake. The Pro Stocks, Midwest Modifieds
and Street Stocks will be NASCAR-sanctioned all weekend as well. The
Pure Stocks and Hornets will see 'local track' rules used in both
divisions.
FYE owner Chris Stepan said "With NASCAR and
IMCA partly sanctioning this event, this year ending event should become
a weekend that drivers and fans will not want to miss. It's not very
often that fans around the upper Midwest can see a Topless Late Model
event, plus there has never been an IMCA-sanctioned Modified event held
at Cedar Lake, which should provide some fantastic
open wheel action. Couple that with the fantastic racing action
that the Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and
Hornets put on each night, this event should be a fantastic way for
drivers and fans to kick off the month of October,"
Thursday night will feature an open practice
session from 6pm to 10pm for anyone interested in tuning up for the big
show and then a post-practice party at Champs Sports Bar & Grill in New
Richmond from 10pm to 2am that will feature drink and food specials to
all who attended practice.
Friday will then see the pit gate and
grandstand gates opening at 4:00pm. Draw cut off and the driver’s
meeting will be at 6:00pm, with hot laps at 6:30pm and racing starting
sharply at 7:00pm. All heat races will be run on Friday night for all
seven divisions with passing points being used to line up Saturday’s
features and consolation races. Friday night will also feature Cedar Lake’s
famous party in the pits with music and refreshments for all to enjoy.
Saturday will then see the pit gates and
grandstand gates opening at 3:00pm. The driver’s meeting will be held at
5:00pm with hot laps at 5:30pm and racing starting sharply at 6:00pm.
All b-features and last chances plus all championship features will be
run on Saturday night.
Stepan also said “As everyone knows, over the
past 7 years, FYE has tried to stage bigger paying shows to give back to
our local area drivers. In my opinion, we have some of the most talented
drivers in the entire country right here in our back yard and I think it
is appropriate that they get to race for some ‘big money’ on a handful
of occasions. Although last year’s format was a bit adventurous, this
year’s event should feature some of the best Upper
Midwest racers vying for some great paychecks throughout the
course of the weekend. Partnering with Cedar Lake
was a no-brainer for this race because CLS has an unmatched,
state-of-the-art facility, which should allow the fans to enjoy this
event even that much more. Last year the racing action was absolutely
incredible and this year should prove to the more of the same.”
In addition, Cedar Lake Speedway co-owner Bob
Kaufman stated “We are thrilled to partner with FYE Motorsports for the
second straight year on this event and are confident that the Badger
State Nationals will prove to be one show you surely don’t want to
miss!”

Cryderman, Marshall, Peterson & Barth are
Badger State Nationals Champions
09/27/08
By Greg Parent
The final night of the FYE
Motorsports promoted Badger State Nationals closed out the racing season
at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday September 27. Joel Cryderman
earned the title in the late model division by leading all 50 laps
enroute to the victory while fellow Thunder Bay, Ontario native Jeff
Marshall took top honors in the Midwest modifieds. Chris Peterson
claimed the $1,000 top prize for his street stock feature win, and Eric
Barth came back from a wreck the previous night to win the Legends main
event on a cool autumn evening.
With full programs in the street
stock and Legends divisions, heat races were necessary. The Midwest
modifieds and late models ran B Mains, Last Chance Races, and their
Championship Features. The Legend cars opened the third straight night
of racing at the Badger State Nationals with three heat races for the 25
cars on hand. Spencer Wilson defeated early leader Kevin Brill in the
first heat. Tom Wagner and Eric Barth swapped the lead several times in
the second heat with Barth making a last lap pass for the win. Cam
Schaefer led all the way to win the third heat in front of last night's
feature winner Joel Wyttenbach. For the street stocks, three heat races
were also necessary for their 23 car field. Chris Peterson dominated the
first heat to win by a good margin over Shawn Kammerud. Kevin Schmidt
held off a determined bid by Friday night feature winner Chanda Fjorden-Nord
to garner the top spot in the second heat. Cory Rosen led all the way
for the win in the third heat, but Jeff Heintz applied the pressure
throughout the nonstop 10 lap race.
Three B Mains in the Midwest modified division would
transfer the top four finishers in each to their championship feature.
Karth Mitchell topped Luke Hines and 7th starter Chad Patterson in the
first 15 lap B Main. Matt Weisman defeated Clayton Wagamon and Jesse
Ogston in the second B Main. Jeremy Houle bested Randy Vezina and A J
Roschen in the last B Main. Finishing in the top six positions in the
two late model B Mains earned a starting spot in the championship
feature race. Eric Breeschoten showed the field the quick way around in
the first 15 lap B Main to finish in front of Rick Egersdorf, Ashley
Anderson, Marshall Fegers, Chuckie DeSmith and Zach Johnson. A
caution-free run in the second late model B Main saw Cory Mahder defeat
Keith Foss, Duane Mahder, Scott Gilberts, Tim Isenberg and Ricky Weiss
to earn transfer spots.
There was one more chance to get into the
championship feature races in the Midwest mod and late models divisions.
Each class would see those cars not already qualifed run a 15 lap Last
Chance Race with the winner tagging the tail of their upcoming feature
race. A starting field of 19 midwest mods took the green for their Last
Chance Race. Following an early caution, the race ran 13 laps nonstop to
the finish with Jason Gross earning the final berth in their feature.
The 15 lap late model Last Chance Race also had only one caution to slow
the pace. Caley Emerson blasted away from the field and went on to
record the win. All feature race lineups were now set and it was time to
bring out the hardware for the title races.
The Legends were up first with their 20 lap main
event. Tom Wagner and Warren Ropp brought the field to the green with
Wagner taking the early lead. A four car crash on lap 2 exiting turn
four eliminated the cars of Cam Schaefer and Ropp. As the race
restarted, Tom Fraser and Tony Brockhouse made contact entering turn
three. Brockhouse's car executed a series of violent flips bringing out
the red flag. Brockhouse was transported to a local hospital complaining
of some chest pain after being removed from his heavily demolished car.
When the green blinked back on, Wagner continued to hold a slim lead
over Troy Speten and Eric Barth. Barth worked his way past Speten
several laps later and put the pressure on Wagner. On lap 10, Barth
moved around Wagner for the lead. Two laps later Joel Wyttenbach got by
Speten for third. Spencer Wilson moved up to third on lap 16 behind
Barth and Wagner. The race continued under green until lap 18 when an
engine fire in John Elewerer's car brought out the final caution and set
up a two lap dash to the checkers. Eric Barth held off Tom Wagner for
the win. Spencer Wilson, Joel Wyttenbach and Troy Speten rounded out the
top five.
The street stocks lined up 23 cars strong for their
25 lap feature paying $1,000 to the winner. Friday night feature winner
Chanda Fjorden-Nord lined up outside the front row next to runnerup
Chris Peterson. Fjorden-Nord took the lead at the drop of the green, but
the race was under yellow just one lap in when Justin Vogel slammed into
the tires that protect the beginning of the concrete wall at the pit
entrance in turn one. Vogel was okay, but his car was out of the race.
On the restart, a three car incident on the backstretch brought out
another caution. All cars were able to continue. The race finally got
going with Fjorden-Nord holding a small lead over Peterson, Shawn
Kammerud and Cory Rosen. Peterson slowly closed the gap until the final
caution of the race waved when Jeff Heintz and Jay Kesan made contact on
the low side entering turn one on lap 11. Heintz' car shot into the
infield and came back out on the track in turn two. Kesan was relegated
to the rear of the field. Fjorden-Nord again held the lead on the
restart with Peterson close behind. Rosen, Kammerud, Andy Miskowic and
Kevin Schmidt battled for third. On lap 17, Peterson was able to move
underneath Fjorden-Nord for the lead. Chanda closed back in a few laps
later but was unable to overtake the leader. Chris Peterson capped off a
successful month of September by winning the Badger State Nationals
after also winning the Legendary 100 at CLS. Chanda Fjorden-Nord settled
for second. Cory Rosen raced back to third after jumping the cushion and
losing several positions. Shawn Kammerud and Andy Miskowic completed the
top five. Rounding out the top ten were Kevin Schmidt, 23rd starter Ryan
Kostreba, Jeff Heintz, Kris Peterson and Rusty Kollman.
Racing for 35 laps, a field of 25 cars lined up for
the Midwest modified main event. Preliminary feature winners Matt Leer
and Bob Smith brought the field to life at the start. Leer raced into
the lead using the low line on the track. A caution for debris in turn
three slowed the pace just two laps into the race. On the restart, Shane
Sabraski moved by Smith for second while Jeff Marshall, Ron Jones and
Jason Vandekamp battled for third. Marshall took third on lap five. A
long green flag run saw the leaders encounter lapped traffic on lap 16.
Leer worked traffic well while Sabraski and Marshall battled for second.
The red light blinked on with 22 laps completed for a safety call on the
seventh place car of Ron Jones. Jones' car had flames coming out of the
back side of the car. The fire was extinguished and Jones was able to
continue in seventh. On the restart, Steve Strandlund and Clayton
Wagamon made contact and collected the cars of Chad Patterson and Jesse
Ogston on the frontstretch. Karth Mitchell dropped out of the race while
some of the battered cars were able to continue. The final caution flew
with 28 laps in when Jeremy Kerzman spun in turn 2 and pulled into the
infield. The battle up front would get interesting following this
caution. Jeff Marshall had moved past Sabraski one lap earlier, and when
the race went back green began to put the pressure on Leer. Marshall
moved to the outside of Leer on lap 30 to take the lead while Sabraski
also got by for second. A lap later Ron Jones and Brock Gronwold moved
by Leer. Jeff Marshall held off Shane Sabraski for the win with Ron
Jones, Brock Grounwold and Matt Leer completing the top five. Ronnie
Rihn, 16th starter Luke Hines, Jason Vandekamp, Jason Hoffman and Wayne
Dean rounded out the top ten. The initial ninth and eleventh place
finishers, Jeremy Houle and Jason Gross, were disqualified for an
altercation in the pit area following the race.
The final race of the 2008 season came trackside with
25 high-powered late model competitors set to do battle for 50 racing
laps. Preliminary feature winners Lance Matthees and Joel Cryderman
paced the field. Matthees got the jump at the start, but his lead was
nullified when Caley Emerson spun in turn three on the opening lap
requiring a complete restart. This time Joel Cryderman grabbed the lead
over Matthees. Jake Redetzke got by Matthees for second a couple laps
later with Pat Doar and Brent Larson close behind. As the laps clicked
by, 9th starter Chad Mahder was on the move forward. Mahder moved to
fifth on lap 11, fourth on lap 13, and got by Matthees for third on lap
16. The yellow light blinked on with 18 laps in when Eric Breeschoten
stalled on the backstretch and required wrecker assistance with a broken
rear-end in his car. At this point Cryderman continued to lead Redetzke,
Mahder, Matthees and Doar. Just two laps after the green replaced the
yellow, Doar moved up to fourth while Don Shaw moved from seventh to
fifth. The leaders encounterd lapped traffic 34 laps into the race with
the top five of Cryderman, Redetzke, Mahder, Doar and Shaw remaining
unchanged until the caution appeared with 39 laps in for Chuckie
DeSmith's stalled car in turn four. One lap later, Shaw moved past Doar
and Chad Mahder into third. The final caution slowed the pace with 42
laps scored for a five car pileup in turn four. On the restart, Shaw got
by Redetzke for second but could advance no further during the final
seven laps. Joel Cryderman turned in a very strong run to earn the
victory in the inaugural Badger State Nationals, leading all 50 laps in
a dominating performance. Don Shaw, Jake Redetzke, Pat Doar and Chad
Mahder completed the top five. Steve Laursen, Brent Larson, Lance
Matthees, Rick Hanestad and Jeff Wildung rounded out the top ten.
Eighteen of the 25 starters finished the race.

Fjorden-Nord & Wyttenbach Show the Way on Night #2 of the Badger State
Nationals
09/26/08
By Greg Parent
With summerlike weather
conditions, the second night of the first Badger State Nationals took
place on Friday September 26 at the Cedar Lake Speedway. The FYE
Motorsports promoted program featured some truly outstanding main event
racing action for the field of 123 cars on hand at the 3/8 mile
high-banked Wisconsin speedplant. When the last lap of racing had been
completed, race fans had witnessed some of the very best feature racing
seen at CLS in quite some time in the street stock and Midwest modified
mains. Earning hard-fought victories tonight in the street stock
division was popular female driver Chanda Fjorden-Nord while veteran
racer Bob Smith topped an incredible battle in the Midwest modified
main. Joel Cryderman turned in a solid performance passing Don Shaw on
lap 8 of the late model feature race enroute to victory while Joel
Wyttenbach came out ahead of a great two car battle for the win in the
Legends feature.
For the second night of the Badger State Nationals,
passing points were again in use during heat race competition. The 28
car Legends field kicked off the racing program with three heat races.
Cam Schaefer came from 7th to win the first heat race over Ivan Sailer.
Mike Miller grabbed the lead from his outside row two starting spot to
lead all the way in the second heat with 7th starter Eric Barth in the
runnerup spot. Nathan Speten only led one lap in the third heat, but it
was the most important final lap of the race as he passed Jeff
Steenbergen for the win. All three heats ran caution-free. Many of the
Legends cars came from the Wisconsin Legends Racing Dirt Series in
Southern Wisconsin while several others made the trip south from North
Dakota where they run weekly at the Nodak Speedway in Minot. A few
Legend cars on hand were from the local area where they run weekly on
the pavement at Elko Speedway.
With some cars unable to return for the second night,
the street stock division had two heat races for the 17 cars on hand.
Chris Peterson led all the way to post the win in the first 10 lap heat
race over 9th starter Chanda Fjorden-Nord. Cory Rosen drove the final
seven laps of the race with a flat left front tire but held on to finish
third. Jeff Heintz was strong up front in the second heat, as he led the
entire distance while Shawn Kammerud and Jay Kesan swapped the runnerup
spot a couple of times before Kammerud regained it for good on lap 7.
A solid field of 43 Midwest modifieds were on hand.
Although the top five finishers from the Thursday night prelim feature
were already locked into the Saturday night championship main event, a
couple of drivers attempted to improve their starting positions by
racing in the Friday night show. Shane Sabraski, who turned in a fifth
place finish in the prelim feature race the night before, drove away
from the field in the first heat to post the win. Bob Smith came from
8th to finish second. A J Roschen led the first three laps in the second
heat, but it was 8th starter Jason Vandekamp on a mission to the front.
Vandekamp took the lead on lap 4 and went on to record the win over Luke
Hines. Roschen saw his night end with mechanical problems while running
second. Bryan Siercks grabbed the early lead in the third heat race
until 4th starter Brock Gronwold moved by on his way to victory. Kevin
Monteith also got by Siercks with one lap to go to finish second. The
fourth heat would see Karth Mitchell lead all the way for the win with
Ronnie Rihn in the runnerup spot. Matt Weisman led the opening lap of
the final heat race, but 2008 CLS track point champion Shawn Phillips
took command a lap later. Weisman stayed close to Phillips but had to
settle for second.
Four heats for the 35 late models would see Jim
Carlson lead the first two laps of the opening heat until Joel Cryderman
blasted by for the win to finish in front of Cory Mahder ten laps later.
Pat Doar led all 12 laps in the second heat over Don Shaw. Rick Hanestad
and Eric Breeschoten traded the lead four times in the first four laps
of the fourth heat race until Hanstad took over for good.
Two Midwest modified B Mains transferred the top
three finishers to the prelim feature race. Wayne Dean came from 4th to
take the lead and eventual win on lap 10 of the first 15 lap B Main.
Eric Herbison and Rusty Kollman took the remaining transfer spots with
Kollman getting by Dane Durbin off the final turn on the last lap for
third. Jeremy Houle led all 15 laps in the second B Main, as he built up
a comfortable margin over second place finisher Bryce Johnson and Sam
Nelson. Scott Erickson finished third but was docked two spots for
jumping on the lap 2 restart, as the race went nonstop the final 13
laps.
The top six finishers in the late model B Main would
earn the final transfer spots to their prelim feature. Keith Foss led
the first three laps, but Tim Isenberg drove past Foss for the lead on
lap 4 and never looked back. Following the leaders were Jim Bruggeman,
Shawn Mahder, Patrick Hoffman and Gregg Hill. A brief intermission
followed this race with some blade work done to the track in turns one
and two prior to the first of four big feature races for the night.
The Legends feature race was up first and all 28 cars
rolled trackside with Joel Wyttenbach and Ivan Sailer pacing the field
for their 25 lap race. At the drop of flagman Jeff Stacken's green, it
was third starter Jeff Steenbergen grabbing the lead at the end of lap
one. Wyttenbach battled back to lead laps 2 & 3 before the first caution
flew for a spin in turn 4. Steenbergen regained the top spot on the
restart and led the next three laps until the second caution waved when
Tom Fraser broke. When the race went green again, fifth starter Spencer
Wilson took the top spot with 11th starter Eric Barth moving into
second. Contact on the frontstretch between Wilson and Barth two laps
later ended with a multi-car crash in turn one. Barth rode the hook to
the pits while Wilson and several other cars pitted for repairs. On the
restart, the red flag appeared when Robert Lever lost the right rear
wheel on his car and flipped hard several times in turn one. Lever was
taken to a local hospital for observation. When the green replaced the
red, an incredible battle for the lead developed once again between
Wyttenbach and Steenbergen. Over the course of the next 13 laps, the two
raced side-by-side with Steenbergen holding a slim lead at the line
during laps 10-18 only to see Wyttenbach edge by to lead laps 19-20.
Steenbergen barely led lap 21, but it was Wyttenbach regaining the top
spot a lap later. Wyttenbach opened up a couple car length lead during
the final three laps enroute to the victory. Steenbergen, 14th starter
Tony Brockhouse, 19th starter Troy Speten and Tom Wagner completed the
top five. Eighteen cars finished the 25 lap distance in a very
entertaining race.
All 17 cars lined up for the Street Stock feature
event. What race fans would witness over the course of 20 nonstop racing
laps likely will be described as one of the best street stock feature
races run in CLS history. Chanda Fjorden-Nord grabbed the early lead
with 2008 Legendary 100 champion Chris Peterson a close second. Peterson
gained the lead on lap 3, as Cory Rosen and Jeff Heintz joined the
battle up front. Peterson and Fjorden-Nord raced hard with Chanda
retaking the top spot on lap 8. Peterson battled back into the lead on
lap 11 and appeared as though he may be able to hold off the other three
drivers. Fjorden-Nord slipped back to third at one time, but she charged
back to put the pressure on Peterson for the lead and regained the front
running position on lap 16. Rosen briefly got by Peterson for second on
lap 17, but Peterson passed Rosen on lap 18 and closed in on the leader.
Fjorden-Nord held off a furious charge by Peterson over the final two
laps to emerge with a thrilling $500 victory in a race that was nothing
short of spectacular. Rosen finished a close third with Heintz just a
few feet behind in fourth. The top four finishers were never more than a
few car lenghts apart for a good share of the race. Jay Kesan completed
the top five with Shawn Kammerud, Kris Peterson, Justin Vogel, Kevin
Schmidt and Rusty Kollman rounding out the top ten. It was a popular win
for the weekly female competitor, as fans cheered her on to victory.
With the crowd still buzzing from the street stock
feature, a very strong 24 car Midwest modified preliminary main event
lined up for 20 racing laps. The top five outside row starting spots in
their Saturday night championship feature race were at stake, so it
figured to be another great battle. The Midwest mod drivers did not
disappoint, as they raced caution-free for 20 laps in what turned out to
be another outstanding feature race. Jason Vandekamp and Bob Smith
brought the field to the green with Smith leading the opening lap. Brock
Gronwold quickly moved from his third starting spot to the lead on lap
2. Smith charged back around Gronwold to lead lap 3. Gronwold edged back
inside of Smith to retake the top spot a lap later. While the leaders
traded the front spot back and forth, Vandekamp and 7th starter Shane
Sabraski were right in the mix too. The second through fourth spots
changed hands numerous times throughout the remainder of the race. At
the halfway mark, it was still Gronwold with a narrow lead over Smith.
Smith moved back by on lap 11 as the top four cars ran in a group lap
after lap. With just a few laps to go, Sabraski emerged from the battle
to take second when Gronwold slipped up over the cushion a bit in turn
two. Bob Smith defeated Shane Sabraski, Jason Vandekamp and Brock
Gronwold for an exciting win. Jason Hoffman finished a close fifth. Luke
Hines, Ronnie Rihn, Matt Weisman, Jeremy Kerzman and Clayton Wagamon
completed the top ten. Only two cars failed to finish the race.
The fans had already witnessed three great feature
races, but it was now time for the rumble of the big late models to take
center stage for their 25 lap preliminary feature race. Again, one of
the top five all-important finishing positions would earn a driver a
starting spot in the big championship feature race on Saturday night
paying $12,000 to win. Don Shaw blasted into the lead from his outside
front row starting spot with Joel Cryderman in tow. Shaw set a fast pace
on the cushion until he drifted a bit high in turn 3 on lap 9. Cryderman
seized the opportunity and took the lead. Shaw recovered to run a close
second as the leaders slowly began working their way towards lapped
traffic. As the leaders worked traffic just past the halfway mark,
Cryderman made a tremendous move to split two lapped cars and put a
little distance between himself and second place. Once Shaw and third
place runner Pat Doar cleared the two lapped cars, they closed in on
Cryderman. Cryderman, making his first CLS appearance of the season,
knows his way around the 3/8 mile oval very well though. With the laps
clicking by, Cryderman continued to lead over Shaw, Doar, Jeff
Hinkemeyer and Duane Mahder. Doar tried several times to get underneath
Shaw exiting turn two but could not. On the final lap, Shaw jumped the
cushion in turn two and Doar drove by. At the checkers, it was Joel
Cryderman earning the win over Pat Doar, Don Shaw, Jeff Hinkemeyer and
Jeff Wildung. Duane Mahder had held the coveted fifth place spot until
the final corner on the last lap when he jumped over the cushion and
lost two spots. The race ran 25 laps nonstop to the finish with only one
car dropping out.
Race fans will certainly want to be on hand when the
late models race for $12,000 to win, the midwest modifieds run for
$3,000 to win, and the street stocks race another full program for
$1,000 to win on the third and final night of the Badger State Nationals
on Saturday September 27. If the racing is anything like it has
been the previous two nights, it should be a fantastic evening of
exciting action at the legendary Wisconsin speedway. The Legend
cars also run another full show. Racing is slated to get underway
at 5:30 with B Mains and Last Chance Races in the late models and
midwest mods preceding the big feature races. The street stocks
and Legends will run heats and features.

Gullikson, Leer & Matthees Are Victorious on Opening Night of Badger
State Nationals
09/25/08
By Greg Parent
As afternoon overcast gave way
to sunny skies, the opening night of the inaugural Badger State
Nationals got underway on Thursday September 25 at the Cedar Lake
Speedway. The FYE Motorsports promoted event saw a field of 110 cars
sign into the pits for the first of three nights of racing action at the
3/8 mile high banked Wisconsin dirt oval. When the final checkers had
waved, Lance Matthees topped a very strong field of late models, Matt
Leeer earned his first CLS feature win in the Midwest modifieds, and Dan
Gullikson returned to his roots with a win in the street stock division
driving the potent Allen Gessell Jr car.
Heat race action for the first two nights of the
Badger State Nationals would see the passing point system in effect. The
top eighteen cars in passing points in each division would line up in
the first nine rows of their feature event while the remainder of the
field would be filled from B Main action in the Midwest modified and
late model divisions. The street stocks did not need a B Main on the
opening night. The street stocks ran a complete race program while the
late models and Midwest mods also ran complete preliminary programs with
the top five finishers in the feature race guaranteed a starting spot on
the inside five rows for the championship features on Saturday night.
Racing action was intense in many of the heat races, especially in the
late model division with the ultimate prize of $12,000 on the line for a
victory on Saturday night.
The street stocks started the race program with three
heats for the 22 cars in attendance. Although the car count was not as
large as a few weeks earlier at the Legendary 100, the quality of the
field was outstanding. Perennial front runner in the street stock
division Scott Paulson grabbed the early lead in the first heat race,
but it was Chanda Fjorden-Nord coming from her fourth starting spot to
take command on lap 3 enroute to the win. North Dakota driver Rusty
Kollman finished second with Paulson holding on to third in the nonstop
10 lap race. Jeff Heintz blasted into the lead from his outside front
row starting spot in the second heat and held off 2008 CLS track point
champion Devin Neske for the win with sixth starter Ron Hanestad riding
home in third. On the opening lap of the third heat race, contact
amongst several cars on the backstretch resulted in Kelly Knutson
rolling over on his roof. As the green replaced the red, Kevin Schmidt
took the early lead. Schmidt led the first four laps before seventh
starter Cory Rosen moved by for the lead and eventual win. Tommy
Richards got past Schmidt a few laps later to finish second while
Schmidt held on to third just in front of Dan Gullikson.
A large turnout of 50 cars in the Midwest modified
division would see five heat races to determine the top eighteen cars in
passing points. Veteran modified racer Ron Jones, driving the Mike
Kyllonen owned Midwest mod, took control from the outset of the first
heat race. Young Clayton Wagamon came from sixth to run a close second
to Jones while another veteran modified racer Bob Smith finished third.
Sam Nelson led the opening two laps in the second heat until third
starter Jeff Marshall drove by and disappeared from the field to post a
convincing win. Nelson finished second in front of seventh starter
Jeremy Kerzman in the nonstop 10 lap race. Another caution-free run in
the third heat saw 2008 CLS track point champion Shawn Phillips lead all
the way from his pole starting spot. Ronnie Rihn, who had one CLS win
during the 2008 season, ran second in front of ninth starter Matt Leer.
Leer would ultimately earn the top spot in passing points with his
strong run forward in this heat. Mark Gerth led all 10 laps to garner
the win in the fourth heat in front of fifth starter Karth Mitchell and
North Dakota driver Patrick Sobolik. An incredibly tough fifth heat race
saw multi-time champion Shane Sabraski lead all the way from his outside
row one starting position. Rookie Midwest mod driver Jason Vandekamp
held off another North Dakota driver, Rusty Kollman, for the runnerup
spot.
The ground-pounding late model division had a very
stout and talent laden 38 car field on hand for the opening night of the
Badger State Nationals. The heat race action was intense! Marshall
Fegers led all 12 laps to post the win in the first heat in front of
veteran racer Jeff Hinkemeyer and young phenom Cory Mahder. In probably
the toughest heat race lineup of the evening, the second late model heat
provided fans with some incredible action. Even though Steve Laursen led
all the way from his outside front row starting spot, the battle behind
him was fantastic. Keith Foss held off eighth starter Lance Matthees,
Joel Cryderman and tenth starting Pat Doar to earn the second spot. Jeff
Wildung was strong in the third heat and showed the way to the checkers.
Duane Mahder came from fifth to finish second in front of Chuckie
DeSmith. Rookie late model racer Shawn Mahder was having a strong run
until his car rode the frontstretch wall and had to be towed to the
pits. The final heat race had a couple of cautions in the early going,
but when the race settled down in was a Rick Hanestad and Jake Redetzke
battle for the win. Hanestad led the first two laps, Redetzke led lap 3,
but Hanestad came back to lead laps 4-6. Redetzke would not be denied
and retook the lead for good on lap 7. Brent Larson got by Hanestad in
the waning laps to finish second.
The Midwest modifieds needed two B Mains to complete
their preliminary feature race lineup. The first 15 lap B Main ran
nonstop. Matt Weisman led the first six laps before fourth starter Brock
Gronwold, coming off two big wins in recent events, took the lead on lap
7 and held it to the checkers. Randy Vezina earned the final transfer
spot to the feature with a third place finish behind Weisman. Jason
Gross, driving Mike Gibson's Midwest mod, finished a close fourth behind
Vezina. The second Midwest mod B Main was slowed twice under caution,
but polesitter A. J. Roschen held on to lead all the way for the win
over Wayne Troseth. Wayne Dean came from 14th to grab the third and
final transfer spot to the feature.
The 15 lap late model B Main had 16 cars make the
call. Caley Emerson saw his bid to make the main event end up on the
hook after contact with Ricky Weiss on the opening lap sent his car into
the concrete wall on the backstretch. After a couple of more cautions
slowed the pace, the race settled down with Scott Gilberts getting by
Joel Cryderman to lead the first 10 laps. Chad Mahder kept moving
forward and on lap 11 took the lead from Gilberts. Mahder showed the way
for the remainder of the race. Gilberts, Cryderman, Rick Egersdorf, 12th
starter Eric Breeschoten and Zach Johnson completed the top six transfer
positions to earn their way into the prelim feature event. Johnson
narrowly beat Tim Isenberg for that final spot.
A strong field of 21 street stocks had tons of talent
in the lineup for their $500-to-win 20 lap feature race. Polesitter Cory
Rosen grabbed the early lead with a huge pack of cars battling two and
three wide for several positions behind the leader. Chanda Fjorden-Nord
and Jeff Heintz had settled in for second and third when the first
caution waved for a spin in turn 3 seven laps into the race. Just two
laps later, 13th starter Dan Gullikson moved to second and began
applying the pressure on leader Rosen. The race was slowed again at the
halfway mark when Justin Vogel crashed into the wall exiting turn 4 and
sustained heavy front end damage. On the restart, Gullikson drove around
Rosen in turn two but a spin on the backstretch by Jay Kesan collected
the cars of Adam Burrows, Rusty Kollman and Scott Splitstoesser. This
put Rosen back in front, and he immediately drove to the top side in
turn one on the restart. Rosen led the next three laps, but Gullikson
continued to look for a way around and found one on lap 14. The last
caution flew for debris in turn one with 16 laps scored. On the restart,
it was Gullikson, Rosen and Ron Hanestad in the top three spots. Four
laps later, Gullikson crossed the finish line to become the first
feature race winner at the Badger State Nationals. Rosen, Hanestad,
Tommy Richards and Jeff Heintz rounded out the top five. Andy Miskowic
came from 15th to finish sixth ahead of 17th starter Kris Peterson, 18th
starter Adam Soltis, Chanda Fjorden-Nord, and Rusty Kollman to complete
the top ten. Legendary 100 winner Chris Peterson saw a top five finish
disappear when he slowed on the final lap with mechanical woes.
The Midwest modifieds came out 24 cars strong for
their 20 lap preliminary A Main. The top five finishers would earn a
starting spot in their $3,000-to-win championship feature event on
Saturday night. Polesitter Matt Leer jumped into the lead at the drop of
the green with Clayton Wagamon in pursuit. Just three laps into the
race, something let go on Wagamon's car sending him into the concrete
wall in turn 4. It took two wreckers to remove his car to the pits. Jeff
Marshall was now in second followed by Ron Jones. After a very ragged
restart resulted in damage to a couple of cars, the race went green for
14 straight laps. Marshall and Jones traded the runnerup spot a couple
of times during this stretch, but Leer was well in control up front. A
spin by Brock Gronwold with 17 laps in closed the field up for what
would be an exciting three lap dash to the checkers. The biggest
benefactor of this caution was seventh running Jeremy Kerzman. On the
restart, Kerzman went from 7th to 4th. Leer again pulled away a bit
during the final three laps to earn his first-ever CLS feature win and
more importantly put himself on the pole for the championship feature on
Saturday night. Jeff Marshall held off Ron Jones for second while
Kerzman earned a Saturday night starting berth with a fine fourth place
finish. Shane Sabraski rounded out the top five. Ronnie Rihn, who was in
the top five prior to the final restart, had to settle for sixth ahead
of rookie Jeremy Houle, rookie Jason Vandekamp, Mark Gerth and 15th
starter Bob Smith.
The final event of the night featured 24 thundering
late models for 25 racing laps in their prelim feature. The top five
finishers would earn starting spots for their big championship feature
race on Saturday night. It did not take long for the first caution to
fly, as Duane Mahder got a bit crossed up in turn one on the opening
lap. Cars scattered and spun with Marshall Fegers, Cory Mahder, Pat Doar
and Eric Breeschoten involved. Fifth starter Jeff Wildung ended up with
a right rear flat tire and had to go to the work area while third
starter Duane Mahder was charged with the caution and relegated to the
tail of the field. Keith Foss also sustained some right front damage but
was able to continue. The second start attempt went much better with
Lance Matthees moving into the lead immediately at the drop of the green
from his outside row one starting spot followed by Jake Redetzke and
2008 CLS track point champion Brent Larson. Just six laps into the race,
Keith Foss slowed and was forced to drop out of the race with the right
front towed out. Fans suddenly took note of 19th starter Chad Mahder
during this caution. Mahder had raced his way up to ninth already. When
the green replaced the yellow, it was Matthees, Redetzke, Larson, Fegers
and Steve Laursen in the top five spots. Sixteen laps into the race,
Marshall Fegers saw his chance for a top five end when something broke
in the right front of his car while entering turn one. Jeff Hinkemeyer
also retired from the race with a flat tire under caution. One lap
later, contact between Kerry Hanson and Cory Mahder saw Hanson's car
slam hard into the concrete wall at the exit of turn four. The race was
under red to make sure Hanson was okay. He was, but his car was done for
the night. Cory Mahder drove his car to the pits. During the final eight
laps, Chad Mahder continued his march forward taking fourth on lap 20
from Laursen. Laursen battled back and reclaimed the fourth spot a lap
later. At the checkers, it was Lance Matthees with a dominating
performance to take top honors over Jake Redetzke, Brent Larson, Steve
Laursen, and Chad Mahder. These five drivers earned starting spots in
the inside five rows for their championship feature race on Saturday
night. Completing the top ten finishers were 12th starter Ashley
Anderson, 17th starter Don Shaw, Pat Doar, 16th starter Adam Hensel, and
Jeff Wildung who returned from his tail-end starting spot after his crew
changed the flat tire on his car following his opening lap misfortune.
Racing action continues on Friday night September 26
at the 1st Annual Badger State Nationals with the late models, Midwest
modifieds and street stocks in action once again along with the Legend
cars. Several Legends practiced on Thursday night with a contingent of
eight cars from North Dakota already on hand. The late models and
Midwest mods will be gunning for the top five outside row starting spots
in their championship features on Saturday night while the street stocks
will once again have a complete race program with $500 to win on Friday
night. The weather is forecast to be great, so come on out and enjoy
some incredible late seaon racing action during the second night of the
Badger State Nationals at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Friday and Saturday
nights. Racing is slated to get underway at 6:30 PM on Friday and 5:30
on Saturday.

After last
weekend’s depressing rain out of Cedar Lake Speedway’s typically
year-ending ‘Legendary 100 weekend’ drivers and fans alike are
incredibly geared up to wrap up the ’08 season in grand style at the
Western Wisconsin speed plant with the running of the FYE Motorsports
Badger State Nationals, which is set to take place on Thursday, Friday
and Saturday, September 25th, 26th and 27th
2008 with an inclement weather date of Sunday, September 28th
if necessary.
Chris Stepan and
St. Cloud, Minnesota
based FYE Motorsports Promotions have leased the Cedar Lake Speedway and
will present the 1st annual Badger State Nationals which will
wrap up the 2008 racing season at Cedar Lake with a bang by offering an
incredible $12,000 to win Late Model event, in conjunction with a
whopping $3,000 to win Midwest Modified event, plus $500 to win Street
Stocks on Thursday and $500 to win again on Friday with $1,000 going to
the winner in the Street Stocks on Saturday night plus two complete high
paying shows for the National Touring Legends Division on Friday and
Saturday nights.
The Late Models and Midwest Modifieds will run a
complete program with heat races, b-features and a preliminary main
event in each division on Thursday night, with the top 5 finishers in
each preliminary feature locking themselves into the Saturday night
Badger State Nationals main event in their respective division. These
drivers will fill in the inside first five rows in Saturday’s main
event. The Street Stocks will be on the schedule Thursday night as well
with a complete program, paying the winner $500. Time permitting, the
Legends will come in and compete in several open practice sessions as
well on Thursday night.
\The
same format will be run on Friday night for the Late Models and Midwest
Modifieds with the top 5 finishers in the preliminary main event in each
division locking themselves into their respective Badger State Nationals
main event on Saturday as well. These drivers will fill in the outside
first five rows in the main event.
The top two drivers in
combined points that have not already transferred into the feature from
Thursday and Friday in each division will also be locked into the Badger
State Nationals main event and will start 11th and 12th
respectively. The Street Stocks will be on the schedule Friday night as
well with a complete program, paying the winner $500. Additionally, the
National Touring Legends Division will compete in a complete program on
Friday night if there are less than 50 cars in attendance. If there are
50 or more Legends in attendance, they will run heat races and a pole
dash on Thursday night only.
Saturday, the Late Models and Midwest Modifieds
will line up in qualifying races based on combined points from Thursday
and Friday nights. Assuming there are 4 qualifying races per division,
the top 3 finishers will then transfer to the Badger State Nationals
main events. Finishers 4 through 8 in each qualifying race will then
line up based on finishing position, into a last chance race, where the
winner will also transfer to the Badger State Nationals main event in
each division. The Street Stock division will be in action with another
complete program on Saturday night, but Saturday night’s event will pay
the winner $1,000 to win. 24 drivers will qualify via heat races and
b-features with the highest driver in combined points from Thursday and
Friday nights being allowed to join the fun as the 25th
starter in Saturday night’s 25-lap feature event.
\The Late Models will be racing for an incredible
$12,000 to win and $1,000 just to start the 50-lap a-main, while the
Midwest Modifieds will be running for an unprecedented $3,000 to win and
$200 just to start their 40-lap a-main. Street Stocks drivers are
running for a whopping $1,000 to win on Saturday night and depending on
car count, the Legends will be racing either a complete program or
b-features and their championship feature as well.

FYE Motorsports Introduces Badger State Nationals April 14th 2008 – St. Cloud, Minnesota (Prepared by FYE Motorsports Promotions)
For the first time in
nearly 15 years, the curtain will not close on the Cedar Lake Speedway’s
racing season with their typically year-ending ‘Legendary 100 weekend’
because a new mega-event is slated on the calendar for 2008 that will
wrap up the ’08 season in grand style at the Western Wisconsin speed
plant. The FYE Motorsports Badger State Nationals is set to take place
on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 25th,
26th
and 27th
2008 with an inclement weather date of Sunday,
September 28th
if necessary.
St. Cloud, Minnesota
based FYE Motorsports Promotions has leased the Cedar Lake Speedway and
will present the 1st
annual Badger State Nationals which will wrap up the 2008 racing season
at Cedar Lake in a grand fashion with an incredible $12,000 to win Late
Model event, in conjunction with a whopping $3,000 to win Midwest
Modified event, plus $500 to win Street Stocks on Thursday and again on
Friday with $1,000 going to the winner in the Street Stocks on Saturday
night and two complete high paying shows for the National Touring
Legends Division on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Late Models and Midwest Modifieds will
run a complete program with heat races, b-features and a preliminary
main event in each division on Thursday night, with the top 5 finishers
in each preliminary feature locking themselves into the Saturday night
Badger State Nationals main event in their respective division. These
drivers will fill in the inside first five rows in Saturday’s main
event. The Street Stocks will be on the schedule Thursday night as well
with a complete program, paying the winner $500. Time permitting, the
Legends will come in and compete in several open practice sessions as
well on Thursday night.
The same format will be run on Friday night
for the Late Models and Midwest Modifieds with the top 5 finishers in
the preliminary main event in each division locking themselves into
their respective Badger State Nationals main event on Saturday as well.
These drivers will fill in the outside first five rows in the main
event.
The top two drivers
in combined points that have not already transferred into the feature
from Thursday and Friday in each division will also be locked into the
Badger State Nationals main event and will start 11th
and 12th
respectively.
Saturday, the Late Models and Midwest
Modifieds will line up in qualifying races based on combined points from
Thursday and Friday nights. The top 3 finishers (assuming there are 4
qualifying races per division) will then transfer to the Badger State
Nationals main events. Finishers 4 through 8 in each qualifying race
will then line up based on finishing position, into a last chance race,
where the winner will also transfer to the Badger State Nationals main
event in each division.
The Late Models will be racing for an
incredible $12,000 to win and $1,000 just to start the 50-lap a-main,
while the Midwest Modifieds will be running for an unprecedented $3,000
to win and $200 just to start their 40-lap a-main. Street Stocks drivers
are running for big paydays three nights in a row now and the Legends
will be racing for a larger purse than they normally compete for each
night as well.
FYE Motorsports Owner Chris Stepan said “As
everyone knows, over the past 5 years, FYE has tried to stage bigger
paying shows to give back to our local area drivers. In my opinion, we
have some of the most talented drivers in the entire country right here
in our back yard and I think it is appropriate that they get to race for
some ‘big money’ on a handful of occasions. This event should feature
some of the best Upper Midwest racers vying for some great paychecks
throughout the course of the weekend. Partnering with Cedar Lake was a
no-brainer for this race because CLS has an unmatched, state-of-the-art
facility, which should allow the fans to enjoy this event even that much
more.”
In addition, Cedar Lake Speedway co-owner
Bob Kaufman stated
“We are
thrilled to partner with FYE Motorsports on this event and are confident
that the Badger State Nationals will prove to be one show you surely
don’t want to miss!”
